Edgar R. Lara, a prominent figure in Cagayan politics, died at age 77 on the afternoon of June 11 due to pneumonia, his family confirmed on June 12.
Lara’s cousin, Cagayan 3rd District Rep. Joseph Lara, acknowledged the loss and highlighted his late relative’s service, saying:
“As governor, he served with dignity, talent, and dedication, showing respect and care for all Cagayanos. He was part of vital legislative measures that touched the lives of the people.”
Edgar Lara earned his law degree from Lyceum of the Philippines and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of the Philippines. He began his public service representing Cagayan’s 2nd District in Congress from 1992 to 2001. He later served as governor of the province from 2001 to 2007.
Following his retirement from elective office, Lara practiced law and returned to his farm in the village of Ignacio Jurado in Lasam, Cagayan. He remained an active figure in his community, often sought out as a mentor and advisor.
Born on October 30, 1948, Lara attended Lasam Central School and Cagayan National High School before embarking on a career in public service.
Lara held the position of second district representative from 1992 to 2001 before serving as Cagayan’s provincial governor from 2001 to 2007.
